TikTok’s AI Shopping Assistant: What E-commerce Sellers Should Do Now

TikTok announced new shopping tools on October 5, during Advertising Week New York (TikTok Newsroom). Two of them matter most for online sellers:
- Shopping Assistant: a conversational AI that helps people find products and answers questions about details, shipping, sizing and availability, remembering what the shopper has said they need.
- Buy Direct: an in-app checkout that lets people buy from a brand without leaving TikTok, including from the For You feed.
TikTok names Shopify, Salesforce, Shoplazza and Stripe among its commerce and payment partners.
Why this is more than another ad feature
Social platforms have always been good at discovery: you see a product, you tap, you leave the app to research it, and then you may or may not come back to buy. TikTok is trying to keep all three steps in one place:
Discover → Research → Purchase
That shortens the path from “I like that” to “I bought it”, and it changes what a video has to do. It is no longer only a way to get attention. It is the start of a conversation in which an AI assistant answers the shopper’s questions on your behalf.
The video gets attention. The data answers the questions.
Think about what people actually ask before buying a kitchen product:
- “Does this rice cooker have a stainless-steel inner pot?”
- “Can this vacuum sealer handle moist food?”
- “Does this range hood need external venting?”
None of these is answered by a good-looking video. They are answered by accurate, specific product information. If your product catalogue says “premium quality, powerful performance”, an assistant has nothing to work with, and it will either guess or recommend a competitor whose listing gives a clear answer.
This is the same lesson as with AI search and AI shopping channels: the assistant is only as useful as the product knowledge behind it.
First, a caution about Canada
The announcement doesn’t say in which countries Buy Direct or the Shopping Assistant are available, and it gives no launch dates. One of the other tools announced is described as being introduced to US advertisers. So don’t assume these checkout features are open to Canadian sellers yet, and don’t build a plan around them.
But it is about e-commerce, and you can still get ready. The preparation helps your sales on every channel, whether or not TikTok’s checkout reaches you.
A simple five-product test
You don’t need to overhaul your catalogue. Start small.
Step 1: Pick five products. Choose items that are popular, have decent margins and are easy to demonstrate. A kitchen-appliance seller might choose a rice cooker, a vacuum sealer, a range hood, an air fryer and a kettle.
Step 2: Make a short demo video for each. Show the product in use and answer the single most common question, such as sealing a moist marinade or showing how the vent connects.
Step 3: Complete the specification behind each video. For every product, check your listing covers:
- Materials and dimensions
- Capacity or size limits
- Compatibility (accessories, bag sizes, voltage)
- What it can’t do
- Included accessories
- Warranty and return terms
Step 4: Measure what each video does. Views alone don’t pay the bills. Use a separate tracking link per video, and record:
- Visits to the product page
- Questions in comments and messages
- Add-to-carts
- Purchases
Questions are especially valuable. Each one points to something your listing doesn’t answer. Add it to the product page, and you’ve improved the listing for shoppers, search engines and AI assistants alike.
Keep it in proportion
TikTok is one channel. Buy Direct and the assistant are new, and details like which brands qualify aren’t clear in the announcement. The sensible approach is the same as for any new channel: don’t depend on one platform, keep your product information accurate everywhere, and check with your e-commerce platform whether it supports the integrations you may want later.
Short-form video may become a more direct sales channel. The sellers who benefit most will be the ones whose product information can back up the video, so that when a shopper or an AI assistant asks a question, there is a clear, correct answer ready.
