Google “Preferred Sources”: Why E-commerce Brands Should Pay Attention

For years, businesses have tried to answer one important question: How do we get Google to show our website more often?

Google’s Preferred Sources feature adds a new dimension to that question — because now, users themselves can tell Google which websites they want to hear from more often.

What Is a Google “Preferred Source”?

Preferred Sources is a Google Search feature that allows users to select websites, publications and creators they trust or regularly follow.

Once someone marks a website as a Preferred Source, Google may give content from that site greater visibility for that particular user when the content is relevant and fresh.

Originally introduced for Google’s Top Stories, Preferred Sources has since expanded globally and can now also appear within AI Overviews and AI Mode. In these experiences, content from websites a user has selected may be highlighted with a “Preferred” label.

This does not mean that becoming a Preferred Source automatically moves your website to the top of every Google search.

Instead, think of it as a new relationship layer between your brand, your audience and Google.

Rather than Google alone deciding which sources deserve attention, customers can essentially say:

“I trust this website. Show me more from them.”

Why Does This Matter for E-commerce Businesses?

At first glance, Preferred Sources may sound like something designed mainly for newspapers and publishers.

But e-commerce businesses should pay attention too.

Today, successful e-commerce websites increasingly act as information sources, not simply online catalogues.

Imagine a kitchen appliance retailer publishing articles such as:

  • “Induction vs. Gas Cooktops: Which Is Better?”
  • “How to Choose the Right Range Hood CFM”
  • “Best Small Appliances for a Condo Kitchen”
  • “What to Look for When Buying an Air Fryer”

A customer may discover the business through one useful article, trust the advice and eventually purchase from the same company.

If that customer chooses the website as a Preferred Source, future content from the brand could become easier for that person to discover across Google.

Google says users who select a website as a Preferred Source are about twice as likely to click through to that site.

That turns content marketing into something bigger than generating individual search clicks.

It becomes an opportunity to build a repeatable search audience.

What Should E-commerce Businesses Do Now?

The biggest opportunity is to stop treating your website as simply a collection of product pages.

Build content around the questions your customers actually ask.

Publish buying guides, comparisons, tutorials, industry updates, original research, expert opinions and answers based on genuine experience.

Most importantly, create something worth becoming a preferred source for.

Google now provides website owners with tools, including a Preferred Source button that can be embedded on a website, to encourage readers to add their site to their Google preferences.

For e-commerce businesses, this represents an important shift.

The future of search may not only be about ranking for a keyword.

It may increasingly be about becoming a source customers trust enough to choose.

And that is a much more valuable position to own.
