Shopify’s AI checkout announcement is becoming bigger than a Shopify feature

Follow up with yesterday’s article, the industry is digesting Monday’s announcement that eligible Shopify merchants can let browser-based AI agents interact with checkout through WebMCP. Agents can inspect checkout, change supported information and submit an order after buyer authorization rather than trying to visually click through a human webpage. Shop Pay is supported.

The important distinction is structured commerce.

Old automation:

AI → looks at webpage → tries to click buttons

Emerging model:

AI → asks commerce system for structured product/cart/checkout functions → executes authorized transaction

That is considerably more reliable.

Seller action: don’t rush to redesign your Shopify store. Instead, improve the underlying information agents will need: product attributes, variants, compatibility, inventory, shipping, returns, warranty, FAQs and structured product identity.
