Shopify Quietly Made 3 Changes

Shopify’s September 8–11 changelog includes three useful merchant updates. Have you noticed what are they?
Product variants can now store up to 20 barcodes each, merchants can collect WhatsApp marketing consent directly at checkout, and Meta now appears as an AI channel within Agentic Storefronts, with products shared through Shopify Catalog.
The barcode change sounds small but is particularly useful for multichannel sellers. A single physical SKU can have different UPC, EAN, GTIN or supplier identifiers across Walmart, Best Buy, wholesale systems and distributors. Instead of creating duplicate variants or maintaining mapping sheets, multiple codes can now resolve back to one Shopify variant.
Seller action: begin treating Shopify as your product-data hub rather than only your website. For important SKUs, audit GTIN/UPC/EAN, model number, dimensions, specifications, compatibility information, warranty, colour, capacity and shipping data.
That becomes increasingly important because Shopify says its merchants are already selling through ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini via Agentic Storefronts. Shopify previously reported that orders coming from AI search were up 13× year over year, with 49% higher conversion rates and 14% higher average order values than traditional search traffic.
Meta becoming an AI commerce channel is more important than it first appears
Meta appearing alongside other AI channels suggests the product catalogue is increasingly becoming the central marketing asset.
Previously:
Product → listing → keyword → search result
Increasingly:
Product data → AI system → recommendation → comparison → transaction
This strengthens the case for the idea we have been discussing recently: businesses need AI-ready commerce infrastructure, not simply another chatbot.
A poorly structured catalogue may still look acceptable to a human shopper but give an AI system insufficient information to confidently recommend the product.
